a place where they can be safe, valued and where they will
be loved… Where they can be themselves and stretch their
wings and learn to fly… A place where they can learn about
and experience the unconditional love of Christ…
A place like the LOGOS program at Mt. Hope Community Church.
WHAT IS LOGOS?
LOGOS is a program of mid-week Christian nurture for children. It is an international program which is offered in churches around the world and which began right here in Penn Hills over 40 years ago. The LOGOS program at Mt. Hope Community Church is a fun-filled program where children come to laugh and learn to value one another – adults and children alike – as God values each of them. Dozens of volunteer and professional staff from Mt. Hope gather every week to play, teach, nurture, and care for the children who participate in LOGOS. Each week these children do Bible study, Recreation, Worship and a very special family meal time. LOGOS celebrates nurturing relationships modeled on Christ himself.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Mt. Hope’s LOGOS program is open to any child of the community entering kindergarten through ninth grade.
WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN?
Every Tuesday from
5:00PM to 8:00PM for two 11 – 13 week terms.
Each term also includes at least 3 Sunday worship services in which the children are required to participate, as well as the Christmas Eve service.
THE NUTS AND BOLTS
Each week the children participate in the four very special segments of the LOGOS Program. These four are:
Bible Study
LOGOS is based on relationships modeled on Jesus Christ. We strive to demonstrate Christ-like love to the children and to inform them about why we behave that way. To help with that “informing” element, children participate in an age appropriate Bible study class. In those classes they learn about Christ’s love through discussion, regular ‘at-home’ assignments, and relationships with their teachers and classmates.
Recreation
Fun is a key element of LOGOS. This is the kind of place kids want to be because it is a fun place. Each week they learn to play at nobody else’s expense… with no name calling, no cheating, and no hurtful words to each other. They learn to recreate in the meaning of the word re-create.
Worship Skills
Worship is central to Christian faith and practice – regardless of denominational traditions. Teaching children about the love of Christ is incomplete without teaching and providing opportunities for them to participate in and even lead worship. In this spirit, every child rehearses every week in choir, or a reader’s theater, or the drama team or in learning to assist in liturgy. They learn the value of preparation for worship and the satisfaction of team work.
Family Meal Time
Dinner! Each week the children share in a family style meal around a table – during which much more than food is ingested. It is an opportunity to share important events from their lives in conversation with other children and loving adult leaders (aka “table parents”) and is also a time to have fun, as every week there are songs, games and activities at the table.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
To register for the LOGOS program, at least one parent or guardian is required to attend a registration meeting. Registrations will not be taken without attendance at one of these meetings. (If none of the schedule times is convenient, arrangements can be made for a private registration meeting.) Registration meetings for the 2007/2008 year will be held as follow:

It is at this meeting that fees are paid for each term, parents may select the ways that they desire to sign up to participate in the program and the children become officially registered.
